The lawn has greened up nicely.
At the end of March, I applied a treatment of Yard Mastery 7-0-20 ‘Stress Blend’ fertilizer. The weekend after that, I applied a treatment of Image selective herbicide. I didn’t have a lot of weeds in the grass, really, but the herbicide doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect on the few I did.
I also had a spot where Bermuda grass was pretty thick. Rather than spraying and risk killing my St. Augustine, I carefully applied Roundup with a foam paintbrush. It worked pretty well to kill it, but left a thatchy mess that was hard to remove without damaging the good stuff. I did what I could. Now, we wait and see. I definitely didn’t kill it all, but my hope/intention is to weaken the Bermuda enough that the St. Augustine will dominate and overtake.
This weekend, I did end up transplanting some grass from the backyard to the front, just to help nudge things along. Unlike last year, I applied some Scott’s EZ-Patch for St. Augustine between the plugs to help the stolons root when they start spreading in a few weeks.
Last summer, I did this is mid-June, in the middle of growing season. It filled in nicely. I still have a bare spot along the sidewalk that was overtaken with crabgrass. I pulled that out last fall, but the grass didn’t move into the area. Hopefully, some EZ Patch there will encourage it to heal.
After getting these plugs in place, I think I’m going to go ahead and transplant more to fill in all the way to the driveway. That should give me a nearly full lawn by Fall.
